In the end we only regret the chances we did not take
Regret is what we are trying to avoid. As mentioned in the previous post, we have talked about moving to the Caribbean since before we were married and the timing never seemed right. However, now things are lining up and we would be crazy not to take this chance. We would always question ourselves, “Why didn’t we go when…?”
What if we don’t like it in St. Croix or the other islands? This is a real possibility because, lets face it, I have lived in the fast lane on the mainland my entire life. I have no idea if living life on island time will suit me or drive me nuts…but I will never know if I don’t try. TJ, growing up on Sullivan’s Island (a South Carolina barrier island), has lived his whole life on island time. Living with him has introduced me to island time because TJ is always late and never in a hurry. I have been practicing my patience everywhere I go, trying not to get frustrated if I am late or standing in line behind someone moving slow.
Fear. This is very real. We are going to sell most everything we own and live on a boat…in the Caribbean. Yes, the fear is there. I think we would be even more nuts if we weren’t a little fearful of this next chapter in our lives. It will be a BIG change from the life we have in the country in Ohio. Then there is the fear of leaving our families behind and moving to, essentially, a new country because we can’t drive to it. While St. Croix is part of the U.S. it is still a long way from home. We have been very fortunate to live near my mom for the first few years of Vivienne’s life and her help when TJ is out of town for work is invaluable. However, it is time for us to start a new chapter for our little family. TJ and I have adventurous spirits and Vivienne seems to have inherited that from us. Anyone who knows her knows she is FEARLESS. So, in essence, we are trying to copy the child-like curiosity and fearlessness that is Vivienne. We are just living examples of the quotation, “feel the fear and do it anyway.”
We are given ONE LIFE and in this life we are given unique opportunities and the choice whether or not to take them. For us, we have the unique ability to live ANYWHERE and TJ will still have a job. So, why not try living someplace completely out of the “norm” for a while? If we don’t like it then we just have one heck of a story to tell if we come back!
